Ron Greschner is known for being one of the best NHL defensemen in the history of the New York Rangers, spending 16 seasons playing in Madison Square Garden. In 2009, he was ranked #12 on the all-time list of Rangers. Today, Greschner is busy with many business opportunities but remains a big fan of the game of hockey and his old stomping grounds.
“I loved playing the game, I loved playing in New York,” Greschner said. “I still get goosebumps at 55 years old going to Madison Square Garden. I go as much I can.”
Greschner scored 179 goals and totaled 431 assists with 1,226 penalty minutes in 982 career games for the Rangers and considered himself a hard worker who always made time for the fans – and still does. His biggest hockey moments include the very first NHL game he played along with scoring the series-winning goal to upset the top-seeded New York Islanders in the 1979 Stanley Cup semifinals.
“I gave an honest day’s work and never turned down an autograph from a fan,” he said. “I played as hard as I could every game. I wasn’t the fastest skater but I was deceiving. I had a smart hockey sense.”
Greschner also has a smart business sense, building All-American Abstract title company (www.AllAmericanAbstractLLC.com) in New York and Greschner Sports Memorabilia (www.GreschnerSports.com) while serving as a spokesperson for XtremeSkin Therapy (www.XtremeSkinFamily.com). On the side, he helps cut construction deals as a broker and runs his own charity foundation benefiting children with autism (www.RonGreschnerFoundation.com).
The Ron Greschner Foundation was founded in 2001 by Greschner, Aidan Quinn and Pete De Stefano Sr . but really took off in 2002 with the first golf outing that has since become an annual fundraising event. Greschner’s nephew is autistic, which is why he has taken a special interest in helping raise money awareness for the developmental disorder.
“We started it up, and it’s like my sixth child now,” Greschner said. “I really enjoy it. The people I know support it very well so it’s great.”
This year’s event is scheduled for July 12th, 2010 and expects to attract 160 golfers and 230 for dinner. Greschner is excited about becoming part of the InterSports Network with a new website to help spread the word of everything he is still working on as a retired player who is very active in the community but also grateful for the doors that have opened up to him thanks to the NHL.
“The economy’s not a powerful thing right now, but it’s picking up,” he said. “Here’s InterSports coming along helping retired players do different things. Everything looks good – it’s a perfect fit for me to get more exposure.”
